Im grau umwölkten September 2013, während den letzten Wochen meiner langsam ausklingenden Sommerferien, begann ich mit den Dreharbeiten zu meinem kommenden Kurzfilm Epilogue, den ich im Juni 2014 auf YouTube und Vimeo veröffentlichen werde. Dieser spielt nach dem Weltuntergang und soll die filmische Antwort auf eine Frage liefern, die mich schon seit Längerem beschäftigt und mich schließlich, nebst meiner Leidenschaft für das in Literatur, Videospielen und eben auch in der siebenten Kunst weit verbreitete Genre der Postapokalypse zum Drehen dieses Films bewegte: was geht im Innern des letzten auf Erden wandelnden Menschens vor?
Anfang April habe ich nach längerer Pause endlich den Dreh der finalen Szenen mit Gavin abgeschlossen – im nachfolgenden ersten Teil meines Textes Neues vom Weltuntergang, in der ich euch Näheres zur Entstehungsgeschichte von Epilogue erzählen möchte, werde ich mich nun den Drehorten, die die im Film dargestellte postapokalyptische Welt glaubwürdig rüberbringen sollen, widmen.

Auch wenn Luxemburg an vielen Stellen dank seines ausufernden materiellen Wohlstands geradezu einem Prospekt für glatt polierte Neu- und wohl gepflegte Altbauten entsprungen zu sein scheint, haben mich die Dreharbeiten zu meinem neuen Kurzfilm an Orte geführt, die diesem Bild in all ihrem wilden und doch verwunschenen Verfall widersprechen. Im Zuge der Dreharbeiten zu meinem Film wurde ich – teils durch Zufall, teils durch Tipps – zu einem alten, seit Jahren verlassenen und dem Zerfall überlassenen Hotel, abgesperrten und verwilderten Industriegebieten – derer sich die grünen Klauen der Natur längst wieder bemächtigt hatten – und im Sonnenlicht träumenden Ruinen von alten Bauernhäusern geführt. All diese Orte eigneten sich aufgrund ihres heruntergekommenen und unter den Zahnrädern der Zeit zermahlenen Äußeren hervorragend als Schauplätze für meinen in der Post-Apokalypse angesiedelten Streifen.
Als ich das Drehbuch zu Epilogue verfasste, tauchten bei der Beschreibung der Orte ständig Bilder von verlassenen Ruinen vor meinem inneren Auge auf – Adam, der Protagonist des Filmes (gespielt von meinem werten Freund Gavin Lesh, der bereits nebst meiner Schwester Marie die Hauptrolle in meinem Musikvideo für die US-amerikanische Sludge-Band Snail verkörperte), sollte schon seit einiger Zeit die postapokalyptische Erde durchstreifen, und deswegen sollten auch die Schauplätze alleine schon durch ihr zerfallenes Äußeres als Symbol für das Verschwinden der Menschen dienen, indem sie die Folgen ebendieses in all ihrer vergehenden und sonderbaren Schönheit verdeutlichen. Desweiteren wird an solchen Orten die Gleichgültigkeit der Natur gegenüber des Menschen ersichtlich: das Aussterben der Menschheit hat letztendlich reichlich wenig Gewicht im Angesicht der Geschehnisse im schweigenden und unbarmherzigen Universum – dieses existiert auch ohne Menschen unbekümmert weiter. Durch Adam wird die Erde dabei zum letzten Mal durch die Augen eines Menschen beobachtet; durch seine Vernunft – durch die der Menschen letztlich zum einzigen Lebewesen wird, das sich seiner eigenen Vergänglichkeit in all ihrer unausweichlichen Endgültigkeit bewusst ist – wird sie noch einmal erhellt, ehe sie für immer in Dunkelheit versinkt. Außerdem sollten die Häuser(ruinen), die Adam aufsucht, noch eine weitere Rolle für ihn spielen, und zwar als Denkmäler des längst untergegangenen Konzepts der “Zivilisation”, die für Adam selbst noch in diesen Zeiten Zuflucht, Komfort und Wärme verheißt.
Hier ist nun der erste Schauplatz, über den ich mehr erzählen möchte – dabei handelt es sich um ein offenbar seit vielen Jahren verlassenes Hotel, das mitten in Esch-Sûre im Norden von Luxemburg, in der Gegend des Stausees, steht. Der kleine, in einem bewaldeten, durch die namensgebende Sûre geformte Tal gelegene Ort, über dem eine gut erhaltene Burg thront, ist ein beliebtes Ziel für Touristen; umso verwunderter war ich, als ich mit meiner Ex-Freundin diesen vergleichsweise großen Komplex, der zentral gelegen ist und inmitten von ansonsten vorbildlich erhaltenen Altbauten und engen, gepflasterten und den Hügel hinaufschlängelnden Straßen dem Verfall überlassen wurde, vor einigen Jahren entdeckte und uns auch durch Zufall auffiel, dass eine der Zugangstüren geöffnet war. An manchen Stellen im Hotel erschien es gar, als ob es in aller Eile verlassen worden wäre – im Eingangsbereich lagen beispielsweise noch Bibeln für die einzelnen Zimmer in Kartons rum. Je mehr die Nacht mit dunklen Wogen durch die Fenster quoll, desto unheimlicher wurde auch die Stimmung während des Drehs – die endlosen und verwinkelten Gänge lockten uns immer wieder in die Irre, und dazu wirkten manche Stellen im Boden in den oberen Stockwerken einbruchgefährdet.
Die beiden obigen Aufnahmen sind bei einem verlassenen Bauernhauses mitsamt kollabierter Scheune entstanden, das auf dem Weg von meinem Dorf nach Luxemburg-Stadt, den ich zu Gymnasiumszeiten täglich befuhr und den an sich doch sehr ungewöhnlichen Anblick somit Teil meines Alltags werden ließ, befindet. Trotzdem sollte ich dieses verwunschen wirkende Anwesen, das wie natürlich die Kulissen der in meinen Erinnerungen konstruierten Wege zwischen verschiedenen Orten formte, erst vor einigen Tagen das erste Mal anlässlich des Drehs zu Epilogue auch tatsächlich betreten – dabei erhielt die sonst immer nur aus einer gewissen Distanz erspähte Hintergrundkulisse, deren objektiver Realität ich mir (wie bei allen niemals von mir betretenen Hintergrundkulissen meines alltäglichen Lebens) nie so sicher gewesen war, erstmals eine gewisse Plastizität und etwas unheimlich Reales. Weder Gavin noch ich wissen genau was an diesem Ort – der am Ende eines dicht bewachsenen Hangs, etwas abseits der viel befahrenen Straße innerhalb des kleinen Dorfes liegt – passiert ist; besonders aufgefallen ist uns dabei der unter der Wucht des Einbruchs verbogene, abgesunkene hölzerne Boden der Scheune. Weiter vorgewagt als bis in den Eingangsbereich des Hauses haben wir uns nicht, da die hölzernen Treppen im Innern arg brüchig wirkten. In der Gegend dieser Ruine, etwas weiter weg in den umliegenden Feldern, befindet sich übrigens noch ein weiteres Bauernhaus, bei dem allerdings schon das Dach und auch teilweise das obere Stockwerk eingebrochen sind. Auch hier weiß niemand so genau, was vorgefallen ist – doch genau dies nährt dann auch umso mehr die eigene Imagination.
Am letzten Tage verschlug es Gavin und mich dann in den Süden von Luxemburg, in die Randgebiete der zweitgrößten Stadt und das zweite “Esch” des Landes neben Esch-Sûre – Esch-Alzette. Als einstiges Zentrum der Schwermetall- und Bergbauindustrie verfügen die Randgebiete des Ortes – insbesondere die “Terres Rouges” und Umgebung – über zahlreiche zerfallene, längst wieder von wilden Pflanzen eroberte und mit Graffiti übersäte Anlagen, Hütten und Fabriken, in denen von Rost zerfressene Maschinen zur Förderung und Verarbeitung der in diesen Gefilden verbreiteten Rohstoffe ihre letzte Ruhe finden. Anlässlich meines Besuches eines von der CNA veranstalteten Workshops über die Arbeit des Location Managers und Regieassistenten hatte der für den Kurs zuständige Location Manager mir, nachdem ich ihm erzählt hatte, dass ich an einem postapokalyptischen Film arbeiten würde, einige Schauplätze im Süden Luxemburgs verraten, die sich hervorragend zur Porträtierung einer postapokalyptischen Welt eignen würden. Einen davon seht ihr nun auf den obigen Fotos – Gavin und ich waren ganz ungemein fasziniert von diesem an Frankreich angrenzenden Ort, den wir durch ein großzügiges Loch im ihn umgebenden Sicherheitszaun betreten hatten. Im Film dient er als Schauplatz für die letzten Szenen, in dem Adam immer mehr in den durch sein Dasein als letzter Mensch ausgelösten Wahnsinn hinein schlittert und schließlich seinem größten Feind in der verlassenen Wildnis gegenübertritt – sich selbst.
Nachdem ich also mit Gavin nun den Großteil des Films bereits abgedreht habe, werde ich Anfang Mai noch einige Szenen alleine in Luxemburg aufnehmen, ehe ich dann hinter dem Schnittpult Platz nehmen und dem Film sein finales Korsett schneidern werde. Zum Abschluss des ersten Teiles von Neues vom Weltuntergang möchte ich euch dann an dieser Stelle noch einige Szenen aus dem Film präsentieren, die es auch höchstwahrscheinlich in die finale Version schaffen werden.
Der nächste Teil von Neues vom Weltuntergang wird dann in einigen Wochen folgen – nachdem ich im vorliegenden Text vorallem die Drehorte berücksichtigt habe, werde ich mich im zweiten Teil mit den Dreharbeiten selbst befassen und rekonstruieren, wie die postapokalyptische Welt und Adams Weg in “Epilogue” Gestalt annahmen.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
