Als ersten richtigen Artikel auf meinem neuen Blog präsentiere ich euch heute eine Review zum Erstlingsalbum der Band Mindpatrol, die sich letztes Jahr unter der Regie von Luc Francois formiert hat und einen äußerst interessanten musikalischen Ansatz bietet.
Die Gruppe, bestehend aus Luc am Mikrofon, Xavier Hoffmann und Frank Laux an den Gitarren und Sandy Moschetti am Bass, spielt nämlich “Konzeptmetal” – anstelle sich also einem einzigen, in diesem Falle dann vergleichsweise eng abgesteckten Metalgenre zu verschreiben, setzen sie sich stilistisch keine Grenzen und stellen die Musik vielmehr in den Dienst des von Luc Francois erarbeiteten Konzepts, um eine Geschichte zu erzählen und diese entsprechend musikalisch darzustellen.
Dieses übergreifende Konzept ist im Falle von “Downfall Theatre” – wie der Titel es bereits verlauten lässt – der tragische Niedergang eines jungen Mannes, der anfangs von einer ihn zu seelischen Höhenflügen emporhebenden Liebe beseelt ist, doch nach deren Verlust immer mehr in den Wahnsinn hinab steigt. Luc Francois erzählt seine Geschichte dabei in oftmals einfachen (wobei sich das im Laufe des Albums noch ändert), aber prägnanten und treffend formulierten Lyrics, die manchmal zwar arg an Klischees und am Kitsch vorbei schrammen, aber, in Symbiose mit der Musik, in ihrer Wirkung umso mehr verstärkt werden und die Story letztendlich überzeugend und spannend vortragen. Somit manifestieren sich die immer mehr in den Wahnsinn hinab gleitenden Gedankengänge des Protagonisten in der Musik, die im Laufe des Albums immer härter und dunkler wird und von leichten Balladen und eher optimistisch gestimmten Power Metal-Liedern hin zu brachialem Thrash-, Death- und Black Metal abdriftet – was seinerseits auch die Lyrics wieder in einem anderen Licht erscheinen lässt. Dieses immer wieder neue Facetten erschaffende Wechselspiel zwischen literarischem Konzept und Musik lässt meiner Meinung nach Konzeptalben als Kunstform eine besondere Faszination ausüben, da man immer wieder neue Zusammenhänge entdeckt und die einzelnen Songs somit über mehrere Dimensionen, die es zu erkunden gilt, verfügen – und genau darauf zielt auch „Downfall Theatre“ ab.
Da man ein Konzeptalbum als Kunstwerk auch immer als eigene Entität, in dem die einzelnen Songs letztendlich eher dem Konzept untergeordnet sind und erst im großen Zusammenhang ihre ganze Wirkung entfalten, betrachten sollte, ist es ratsam das ganze Album am Stück zu hören. Dennoch möchte ich noch einmal näher auf die einzelnen Songs eingehen, insbesondere da sie – bis auf die Zwischenspiele – auch alleinstehend sehr gut funktionieren.
Das einleitende Stück „A Story From Beyond“ setzt mit Synthiestreichern und verwunschener Akustikgitarre ein und liefert einen gelungenen Einstand, der bereits für einiges an Atmosphäre sorgt und den Rahmen für die Geschichte schafft, da der Protagonist in diesem einige Hinweise auf das Kommende gibt und somit die Spannung des Zuhörers weckt. Mich persönlich erinnert das Lied auch an einige mir besonders lieb gewonnene Videospielintros – insbesondere einige Melodien aus „The Legend of Zelda“ und „Fire Emblem“ geisterten beim Hören von „A Story From Beyond“ als vages Echo durch meinen Kopf.
„Forever Mine“ ist dann das erste richtige Lied und besitzt durch Lucs Gesang, die cleane Gitarre, Streicher im Hintergrund und den relativ simplen Aufbau Balladencharakter. Trotz der Tatsache, dass das Lied, im Gesamtkontext des Konzepts betrachtet, durchaus passt und von daher stimmig wirkt – immerhin schwärmt der Protagonist hier von der ewigen Liebe zu seinem Sohne, und das würde wohl kaum Resonanz in einem brachialen Grindcore-Lied finden, auch wenn dies zugegebenermaßen reichlich amüsant wäre -, fällt der Song meiner Meinung nach im Vergleich zu den anderen, und vor allem den härteren, späteren Liedern des Albums, deutlich ab. Die Melodien besitzen trotz oder gerade wegen dem leichten – gewollten – Kitschfaktor Ohrwurmqualitäten, allerdings trifft Luc nicht immer den Ton, was besonders im Refrain zum Vorschein kommt. Bei seinem Cleangesang besteht allgemein noch Nachholbedarf, da er noch etwas dünn und wacklig klingt; mit etwas Feilen müsste da aber noch einiges rauszuholen zu sein.
Das nachfolgende „Golden Light“ startet dann sehr überraschend mit einem etwas unsauberen und zu abrupten Übergang, der den Hörer sofort in die Mitte des Geschehens katapultiert. Ab dann entwickelt sich das Lied aber zu einem wirklich mitreißenden, schnellen und launigen Power Metal-Titel (ein Genre, das ich einst sehr mochte und für das ich, insbesondere aufgrund meiner Affinität für alles was mit Fantasy zu tun hat, noch immer reichlich Sympathie hege, selbst wenn mein Musikgeschmack sich in der Hinsicht gewandelt hat), getragen von Lucs deutlich epischerem Gesang, der wie bei „Forever Mine“ noch manchmal am Ton vorbei schrammt, dafür aber die Gitarrenläufe sehr gut begleitet und beeindruckende Höhen erreicht. Das Abbremsen des Tempos beim Refrain sorgt dazu für Abwechslung, und der rasante Gang des Lieds fängt die Stimmung des von der Liebe, wie eingangs erwähnt, zu seelischen Höhenflügen inspirierten Protagonisten passend ein.
Nach einem weiteren kurzen Interludium namens „Eclipse“, das mit einer Spieluhr im Hintergrund für Stimmung sorgt und kurz Lucs luxemburgischen Akzent (der aber ansonsten meiner Meinung nach nicht allzu sehr auffällt) durchsickern lässt, folgt „To Heaven Again“. Auch hier muss ich Luc auf der einen Seite mein Lob dafür aussprechen, dass er sich wirklich Mühe gibt seinen Gesang so abwechslungsreich wie möglich zu gestalten, mir auf der anderen Seite aber seine Growls und Screams, die im späteren Verlauf des Liedes dann zum ersten Mal auf dem Album auftauchen, im Vergleich zum Cleangesang deutlich besser gefallen. Hervorheben möchte ich bei diesem Lied auch die gelungenen Basslines am Anfang!
Der Aufbau der Lieder wird ab diesem Zeitpunkt deutlich komplexer und die Stimmung, im Einklang mit der sich verdunkelnden Gedankenwelt des Protagonisten, dramatischer – das spiegelt sich auch im darauffolgenden Song „The Void“ wider, der mit genau acht Minuten Spielzeit das längste Stück des Albums bildet und dazu einen meiner persönlichen Favoriten darstellt. Nach einem kurzen Intro prescht die Instrumentalfraktion unaufhaltsam nach vorne und verfällt gelegentlich in grandiose, headbanginduzierende Thrash Metal-Raserei – dazu ist der zweistimmige Gesang am Anfang dieses Mal wirklich sehr gelungen. Die Struktur des Lieds verzichtet auf das übliche Strophe-Verse-Refrain-Schema und bietet dadurch, wie eingangs erwähnt, eine erfrischende Komplexität, sodass man richtig darin versinken kann – und kurzzeitig vernahmen meine frohlockenden Ohren unter dem dichten Soundteppich sogar Blastbeats!
Ab nun wird die Stimmung der Lyrics und somit auch die der Musik stetig verzweifelter und verwandelt sich in das Echo des klagenden Protagonisten. „Cold“ demonstriert das sehr eindrucksvoll und kommt als eines der ungewöhnlichsten und interessantesten Lieder daher – es drosselt das Tempo und vertraut fast ausschließlich auf hypnotisierende Gitarrenleitern, gleichermaßen flüsternden, beschwörenden und klagenden Gesang und baut sehr viel Atmosphäre auf. Das darauf folgende Zwischenstück „Metamorphosis“ kommt gleichermaßen schräg und beunruhigend daher, und markiert letztendlich den Punkt im Niedergang des Protagonisten, an dem es kein Zurück mehr für ihn gibt.
Mit “Depulsoris Ira” bricht dann mein ganz persönliches Lieblingslied vom Album, bei dem mein innerer Metalhead in Entzückung verfällt und diesen Nackenbrecher einfach bejubeln muss, wie ein Fegefeuer aus der Hölle geradewegs über den Zuhörer herein. Der Song bereitet Unmengen an Spaß und besticht durch ein hohes, spieltechnisches Niveau, einen treibenden Rhythmus, eine angenehme Vertracktheit und einige sehr köstliche dissonante Riffs. Dazu sind Lucs Growls angenehm tief und keifen dem Zuhörer die klischeebehafteten, aber passenden Lyrics mit der nötigen Durchschlagskraft entgegen.
„Crossroads“ ist ein solides Instrumental und verdeutlicht wieder einmal dass die Jungs an den Instrumenten ihr Metier beherrschen.
„King of Existence“ ist besonders von den Lyrics her sehr interessant, da er die Thematik des Theaters, in dem auch die Handlung eingebettet ist, (immerhin erzählt der Protagonist seinen Fall selbst in der Form eines Theaterstücks, wie auch im Roman nachzulesen ist) aufgreift und den Protagonisten zum namensgebenden König werden lässt, der seine Armee aus Geistern beschwört – was bereits durch entsprechende Samples am Ende von „Crossroads“ angekündigt wird. Hier möchte ich besonders noch einmal die Riffs hervorheben, die sich sehr ausgeklügelt und sauber in die Gehörgänge des Zuhörers fräsen. Dazu gibt es einen zünftigen und gelungenen Breakdown – das Lied hat nämlich einen starken Metalcore-Einschlag – mit unheimlichem Geistergesange im Hintergrund.
Auch „Masquerade“ verfährt ähnlich, in dem es den Protagonisten über seine Maske, die er sich angezogen hat, um seinen Verlustschmerz zu verbergen, sinnieren lässt. Das erinnert frappierend an Shakespeares Devise “All the world‘s a stage“, was der Geschichte hinter dem Album und somit dem Konzept wiederum einen doppelten Interpretationsboden schafft – vordergründig steht somit der Inhalt des Theaterstücks und die Geschichte des Niedergangs des Protagonisten; dahinter, auf einer Metaebene, das Reflektieren des Hauptcharakters über das Schauspielern und Annehmen von bestimmten Rollen, wie wir es letztendlich alle im Leben tun, selbst. Dies zeigt, dass Luc Francois sich beim Erarbeiten des Konzepts und seiner Facetten wirklich viel Mühe gegeben hat und dem Zuhörer auch gerne Interpretationsmöglichkeiten überlässt, insbesondere da er die Lyrics durch diverse Ellipsen und eine eher implizite Erzählweise doch sehr offen für eigene Auslegungen ausformuliert hat.
„Black Elixir“ stürmt als geballter, in Schallform gefasster Hass heran – mittlerweile befindet sich der Härtegrad der Lieder in Death Metal-Gefilden. Das Lied ist eher konventionell gestrickt und sticht auf dem Album nicht besonders hervor, rettet sich am Ende aber noch einmal mit Chorgesängen und einem richtig gelungenen Solo aus dem Mittelmaß.
„Omega“s dramatische Orgelklänge kündigen dann das bevorstehende Ende an, das in Form von „My Final Sin“ als eiskalter Black Metal-Klumpen mit genreüblichem Tremolo-Picking und peitschenden Drums heran gefegt kommt. Der Protagonist wird sich seiner bereits angedeuteten Maskerade bewusst und setzt, vom Wahnsinn zerfressen, seinem Leben letztendlich ein Ende. Der dazu passende leichte Doom-Einschlag am Ende des Songs ist ein weiterer Pluspunkt, der zusätzlich Atmosphäre schafft. So endet also das „Downfall Theatre“ – Zeit, ein Fazit zu ziehen.
Produktionstechnisch habe ich nichts gegen das Album einzuwenden – die Soundqualität befindet sich auf einem durchgängig guten Niveau, besonders wenn man in Betracht zieht dass es sich hierbei um eine Eigenproduktion handelt. Xavier, der neben seinem sehr überzeugenden Klampfenspiel auch über viel Finesse bei der Produktion verfügt – ich durfte mich schon selbst bei den Aufnahmen zur EP meiner Band Plaguewielder von seinen Kenntnissen als Leiter von Muschel Productions überzeugen -, hat eine mehr als beachtliche Arbeit geleistet. Die Instrumente ertönen nämlich differenziert und klar voneinander unterscheidbar, und besonders in den Liedern, die über mehr Heaviness verfügen, wie etwa „Depulsoris Ira“ oder „My Final Sin“, klingen die Gitarren richtig schön fies, brachial und druckvoll. Ein weiteres Lob meinerseits gilt den Instrumentalisten – alles wurde (bis auf einige bereits erwähnte abrupte Übergänge) sehr sauber eingespielt, und dazu sind die Solos überzeugend. Auch der Drumcomputer – die Band sucht nämlich momentan noch nach einem Drummer – klingt organisch. Vom Aufbau her erinnert mich das Album übrigens – und das ist ein Kompliment meinerseits – an das absolut grandiose „Pelagial“ von The Ocean, wobei ich „Downfall Theatre“ eine stilistisch gesehen größere Vielfalt zusprechen muss; auch Symphony X fällt mir als Reminiszenz ein, insbesondere durch den gelegentlich sehr orchestralen und mit “Segues” gepflasterten Aufbau.
Insgesamt hat mich Mindpatrols Erstlingswerk also, trotz einiger Makel – wie etwa dem verbesserungswürdigen Cleangesang, einigen klischeehaften Passagen in den Lyrics oder diversen harschen Übergängen – überzeugt, insbesondere aufgrund seines musikalischen Abwechslungsreichtums und der dichten und überzeugenden Atmosphäre. Man merkt der Truppe um Luc Francois jedenfalls die großen Ambitionen, die hinter ihrem musikalischen Projekt stecken, an, und das finde ich bewunderns- und unterstützenswert, insbesondere in einer Zeit, in der das Konzeptalbum durch die Entwicklungen in der Musikindustrie – durch die heutzutage eher einzelne Songs als ganze Alben gekauft beziehungsweise gedownloadet werden – als Kunstform doch nicht allzu häufig auftritt. Letztendlich finde ich, dass die „harten“ Passagen des Albums die besten darstellen, was mich dann aber zu einem Dilemma führt: einerseits finde ich diese nämlich so gelungen, dass ich mir wünschte, sie hätten die Balladen ganz ausgelassen; gleichzeitig aber hätte das dazu geführt, dass viel Atmosphäre, Abwechslung und Stimmigkeit verloren gegangen wären und das Konzept nicht mehr geklappt hätte. Deswegen hoffe ich, dass beim nächsten Release die sanfteren Seiten von Mindpatrol – auf die sie auf keinen Fall verzichten sollen! – sich auf einem ähnlich hohen Niveau wie ihre düstereren Facetten befinden und somit zu einem runden Gesamteindruck führen.
Trotz alldem kann ich aber jedermann, der auf interessante musikalische Erfahrungen steht, wärmstens empfehlen, sich „Downfall Theatre“ anzuhören und die Herren von Mindpatrol zu unterstützen, denn die Band zeigt mit ihrem sehr gelungenen Einstand bereits großes Potenzial.
